The Best Place To Start
The source “The Best Place to Start '' is a short film produced by Georgetown college students in 2019. At first glance, the film is about how Georgetown implemented a referendum where students were obligated to pay a fee of $2.72 each semester. That fee would be allocated towards the descendants of the enslaved in many different ways such as education, healthcare, etc.
However, the source explores how different people viewed Georgetown's reparations, and more specifically the referendum and their opinions on it. The film captures all of the different groups that are affected by Georgetown's history and its’ reparations such as the descendants, students, and faculty.
What makes this film eye-opening is that it shows a contrast of views on how Georgetown should go about making these reparations. On the one hand, a part of the Georgetown community is protesting and urging people to vote for the referendum. On the other hand, some people don’t agree with it and argue that Georgetown should bear the entire cost of the reparations because it is entirely responsible for the damages that the sale has done.
The most important part, however, is that the filmmakers travel to Louisiana and interview the descendants of slaves that were in the sale. It gives people an inside look into what the slaves lived through and how this sale affects people to this day. Additionally, it also gives insight into what people who are still affected by the sale think Georgetown should do.
